La Pescadora Postcard

I painted La Pescadora while on a residency in Almería, where it was rumoured that the finca was built with profits from catching grouper in the Mediterranean nearby. Wolfgang Simon was a printmaker, free diver and passionate environmentalist and he often caught the once plentiful fish off the coast. The self portrait is based on a photograph of him, giving my thanks to him for the beautiful home he built that is now an inspiring community of ecologists and creatives, while also acknowledging how we have greatly benefitted from destructive practices, the implications of which we can not truly foresee until it is too late.
